Project Title |
Using FME to facilitate mobility across data formats in Enterprise GIS |
Abstract |
Our Client, one of the leading utility firms in the Electricity sector with over 8 million customers in South-East Asia, uses various enterprise GIS systems depending on their purpose (Desktop, Web, Mobile) and division (Distribution/ Transmission/ Generation). Each of the enterprise GIS system has its individual database which stores data in its own individual data format. One of the gaps in having various GIS systems was to migrate and keep the data in sync between all the GIS systems. For example, Field Data collected in Mobile GIS by the data collection vendors needs to be migrated to the core desktop GIS and the latest data changes in the core GIS needs to be in sync with the view-only web version of GIS. FME was chosen as the supporting backbone to bridge the data migration and data syncing gaps between different enterprise GIS systems. This presentation will showcase how FME was used to migrate the electrical asset data collected from the field to the core GIS system with end-to-end automation, and exporting data from core GIS to the web GIS on daily basis. It will also elaborate how only the updated data from the core GIS was exported to the web using differential export methodology instead of exporting the whole data daily.

About the Presenter |
Humzaa Sheriff is a GIS Consultant at Red Planet Solutions Sdn. Bhd., with over 4 years of experience in the Utility domain. He has worked for leading Electric utility clients in India and Malaysia. He is experienced in implementing enterprise GIS systems, integrating GIS with external systems and data auto-migration projects across multiple enterprise GIS systems. He is currently in a client facing role, working on GIS support and implementing a system for a nation-wide data migration project, for an electricity firm with over 8 million customers.

Integration of 3D Reality Modelling, BIM & GIS for MRT SSP Line Project |
Abstract |
The SSP MRT Line is the 2nd line of the KVMRT Project. It will serve a corridor of 2 million people stretching from Sungai Buloh, through the centre of Kuala Lumpur and its southern suburbs, to Putrajaya. The alignment length is 52km with 39km of elevated tracks and 13.5km running through underground tunnels. It will have 35 stations with 24 elevated and 11 underground.
3D Reality Models from Drone Images, Laser Scanning and Virtual Reality is changing the construction and survey industry by providing real world existing conditions. BIM technology is rapidly transforming the way buildings and infrastructure are designed, constructed and operated. Together with GIS its helping engineers, consultants and companies build cost efficient and better-quality construction in shorter time frames. This presentation covers the benefits of integrating Reality Modelling, BIM and GIS in the MRT project and how FME is used at the core data transformation and interfacing tool.

About the Presenter |
Tony is currently the Development Lead working closely with GIS and BIM technology in MMC Gamuda KVMRT. BIM is becoming the recognized collaborative process and environment in the delivery of construction and infrastructure projects. BIM, CDE and GIS continue to evolve and converge as an integrated geospatial solution. Tony has more than 19+ years' experience in GIS / Geomatics / Survey / Oil & Gas projects and proven success from design, development and implementation of award winning projects. His experience includes government, survey, water utility, energy / petroleum and infrastructure projects having worked for SIEMENS, ESRI, Hess Oil and Murphy Oil previously.

Flood Alert Analysis from Web Crawling |
Abstract |
Flood is a form of natural disaster that causing losses to human, animals, assets and properties. Though it is inevitable, the after effect could be minimise if we have enough time to prepare for it.
In Malaysia, the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) has published a website that provide the live information from flood gauge station along rivers in Malaysia. But, how do we make this information available to us when we need it. It is impossible to always browsing to that website all the time for the merely purpose of checking the alert message.
A FME Workspace is modelled to fetch and process data from public website (flood gauge), then it will further process with spatial analysis. The yielded information will be, an email alert to subscribers that contain information of places within flood alert zone.
Operations that taken place:-
1- Preparation of A set of database of places nearby flood prone area with elevation 2- Read website source code 3- Split and explode into attribute 4- Determine closes flood gauge and its alert message 5- Comparing elevation, flood gauge alert message and closes distance 6- Using HTML formatter to write message 7- Send message to subscriber using emailer 8- Automated the workspace using batch file
The benefit of this project is to provide an advance warning alert, so that people have enough time to prepare the possible cause that are coming and to reduce the losses after disaster.

Drawing Electrical Distribution Network using FME from Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) data |
Abstract |
In corporate world, most business key functions are integrated in the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) application such as SAP. For utility industry, SAP ERP integrates company's asset through Finance, Project System, Inventory Management, Plant Management and Purchasing System. SAP ERP does not provide system network drawing for their users but registers network asset and equipment records at every levels in the organisation. Currently, the drawing needs to be drawn manually using Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) application and need to be redrawn manually again whenever new assets are commisioned or reconfiguration enabled in the system. Even with the computer controlled Distribution System Operation (DSO), the system operation and business operation are running separately. With SAFE FME software, we are now able to draw the distribution network based on downloaded ERP data for selected operational area quickly and whenever changes in the system. The FME workbench provides configuration tools to transform tabular asset data into CAD drawing and hence publish it to spatial and tabular data files, ready to print documents and web pages. These outputs is very useful for System Planners and Maintenance Engineers. The presenter shares his experience of publishing Electrical Distribution Network Drawing using FME Desktop in Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB). As leading electrical utility company in Malaysia, TNB holds approximately 70,000 medium voltage substations and its connecting distribution network across the whole peninsular.
