Thank you to the multitude that replied to my question; apparently I have been in the dark for some time regarding XTools, as that was the most common answer. http://gis.esri.com/arcscripts/ http://www.odf.state.or.us/sfgis/ However, there were other solutions offered (in no particular order): #1. Add the .dbf to Access as a 'linked' file #2. Use the 'Tinfo.ave" sample script #3. Use the Shapefile Description dialog, "shpdesc.avx" #4. Use the "fldprops.ave" #5. A couple individuals sent me their own custom scripts, which I appreciate. Thank you to all who personally responded.
