My original question was:

<does anyone know if it is possible to include variables in <a query string?

<I am trying to query a table including a variable which <has been set through
<the msgbox.ChoiceAsString command:

<'set variable YourChoice

<bearbeiten?", "Gemeinde" )


<This is how I coded the actual query:

<gmVTab.UpdateSelection


<Unfortunately, this does not work. If I replace <YourChoice.AsString with a
<string that occurrs in the table, f.ex.
<expr = "([Gem98Name] = ""Altendorf"")"

<then it works. Now I suspect that variables cannot be used <within a query
<string. Does anyone know if that is true and if yes, how I <could find a
<work-around??


The answers were all very similar, the problem with my code was that I did not
use the .Quote command for the variable.

1.

You should be able to use variables. Try .Quote, for example: expr =
"([Gem98Name] = YourChoice.AsString.Quote )"




2.

Yes, you can use variables in a querystring. Just be sure ArcView recognizes
it as a variable. ArcView reads everything between the " " as a string. If
you look at your querystring in a MsgBox, you will see that ArcView reads
your querystring as: "([Gem98Name] = YourChoice.AsString)".
The first part of the string is rigth, the second part should be the
variable. In Avenue you can combine 2 strings to 1 string with the "+" sign.
For instance:
expr = "([Gem98Name] =" + YourChoice.AsString + ")"

This still does not work because a string must be surrounded by "". Look for
instance to the Query Builder of ArcView. If you perform the query in the
QueryBuilder, the expression reads as:
([Gem98Name] = "Altendorf"

There are 2 ways to solve this:
1. Hardcode the "" in your code. This is not very nice...
2. Use the request .Quote. (See ArcView Help for more information). Avenue
'quotes' the expression and changes Altendorf in "Altendorf". Exactly what
you want...
The complete codeline will be:
expr = "([Gem98Name] = " + YourChoice.AsString.Quote + ")"

It's quite simple. Change your expression to:

expr = "([Gem98Name] ="++YourChoice.asString+")"
query1 = gmVTab.Query(expr.quote, theBitmap,
#VTAB_SELTYPE_NEW )





4.
try this:
expr = "[Gem98Name] ="+YourChoice.Quote

This should work. Use the round brackets only when you want to generate
multiple query-strings. Hope this helps you...

Try the quote command on your variable, as well as concatenating the
string with your variable with the + operator. Shown in the example
below

'perform query
theBitmap = gmVTab.GetSelection
expr = "([Gem98Name] = "++YourChoice.asString.Quote++")"
query1 = gmVTab.Query(expr, theBitmap, #VTAB_SELTYPE_NEW )
gmVTab.UpdateSelection


6.

Recode your expr as follows:

Expr = "([Gem98Name] = " + YourChoice.asString.Quote +")"


The .Quote method is not needed if the expected response is going to be a
number.


7.

I query variables using the following statement using the global variable
_ParcelNumber

astring = "Select * from LRSPF002 where LRSPF002.PARCELNO =
'"+_ParcelNumber+"'"

Try adding the plus signs in your string.

8.

Try this:
address = midtestVTab.ReturnValue(srcAddrFld,rec) 'Set the address string
qStr = "[Address] " + address.Quote ' create the query string
