Tom's SUM on running the two versions of AV mentioned that:

"NT users may run into some resource problems with the dual install given
that both 3.x and 8 need to be installed on the primary partition, which has
a maximum size limit."

I can't speak for AV 8.1 or for the combination of both versions, but I can
say that I have AV 3.2 installed on the secondary partition of my local
drive precisely because there is more space (10GB vs. 2GB), and in about a
year and a half I've never had a problem because of the installation
location.
